In this episode of When Shift Happens, I sit down with Raoul Pal, co-founder and CEO of Real Vision and founder of Global Macro Investor, for our sixth conversation to discuss the future of crypto, the accelerating impact of artificial intelligence, and why he believes the next four years could fundamentally reshape the global economy. We revisit his investment predictions, examine the thinking behind his controversial SUI position, and explore what decades of navigating financial markets have taught him about conviction, patience, and building wealth. For Raoul, the opportunity ahead is extraordinary, but so are the consequences of getting left behind.

Why Doing Less Has Become Raoul's Investment Strategy

When we first spoke more than two years ago, Raoul was anticipating the arrival of the "Banana Zone," a period of explosive crypto price appreciation driven by expanding liquidity. That rally never materialized as he expected, but his underlying investment philosophy has barely changed.

Over the past year, Raoul has made just two purchases during significant market corrections, alongside adding a position in Zcash. Rather than actively trading market cycles, he focuses on accumulating assets he believes will appreciate over longer periods.

His principle comes down to compounding and the psychological difficulty of timing the market. Selling near a market peak might sound straightforward, but buying back after prices fall is considerably harder since investors are likely to hesitate, expect prices to decline further, and eventually find themselves watching prices recover from the sidelines.

Raoul uses deviations from long-term logarithmic price trends to identify moments when assets are particularly undervalued. Buying at depressed prices, such as accumulating Solana and Ethereum during the 2022 downturn, helped his portfolio recover to previous highs before the broader market did.

Understanding Liquidity and the Case for a Crypto Supercycle

Raoul acknowledges that the relationship between global liquidity and cryptocurrency prices has been weaker than he anticipated, as a disproportionate share of available capital has flowed into AI-related technology stocks. But he believes that situation could eventually reverse. More importantly, Raoul argues that stablecoins, tokenized assets, decentralized finance, and AI-powered transactions are creating new sources of demand for blockchain networks, and transforming crypto into essential financial infrastructure.

He considers Ethereum and Solana as established infrastructure networks, with other blockchains competing to become similarly important. His broader prediction is that crypto and technology could experience a prolonged supercycle extending toward 2030, resembling the accelerating technology boom of the late 1990s. That does not mean prices will rise uninterrupted. Severe corrections remain possible, but investors who focus exclusively on short-term volatility risk missing the longer-term structural transformation.

The SUI Bet and the Difference Between Conviction and Being Wrong

Perhaps the most revealing part of our conversation concerns SUI, a blockchain Raoul has publicly supported despite its price performance. He acknowledges that his purchased SUI holdings are underwater, with an estimated average entry price of approximately $1.70, excluding tokens received from the foundation.

Still, he has maintained conviction because he believes only a handful of layer-one blockchains will eventually dominate the market for blockchain infrastructure. He sees SUI as a potential contender because of its technology, transaction capabilities, and suitability for emerging applications. But he also recognizes that impressive technology alone does not guarantee success.

What matters is adoption.

He examines metrics such as active users, economic activity, and the value generated across the network. In SUI's case, he points to its economic density, or the amount of value associated with each user, as an encouraging signal. Still, without meaningful user growth, that metric cannot support his thesis indefinitely.

"I’m a massive believer, and my job is to question that," he explains.

Being early means waiting for supporting evidence to emerge, while being wrong means that evidence fails to materialize or the assumptions behind an investment no longer hold. Raoul has experienced both. He discusses his unsuccessful investment in KR1 and admits that selling losing positions remains psychologically difficult, even after decades in financial markets. His experience illustrates that conviction is valuable only when accompanied by continuous reassessment.

Why AI Could Make the Next Four Years Critical

Raoul's most consequential prediction extends beyond cryptocurrency. He believes an economic singularity could emerge around 2030, when artificial intelligence advances so rapidly that traditional assumptions about productivity, employment, wages, and economic growth no longer apply. AI could initially suppress wage growth by making knowledge-based work dramatically cheaper, then over time, improvements in automation, energy production, and manufacturing could reduce the cost of physical goods as well. But the transition will not happen evenly.

Raoul’s concern is that society may struggle through the transition before experiencing the benefits of widespread abundance. Workers could face growing economic pressure, governments may struggle with redistribution, and political opposition could intensify around AI infrastructure and employment disruption. Raoul therefore believes individuals have roughly four years to improve their financial position and create greater personal freedom.

The Real Purpose of Building Wealth

Raoul remains convinced that AI and blockchain represent a historic technological shift. He also acknowledges that his predictions can be early, his investments can lose money, and the path forward will be uncomfortable. The deeper lesson is not that investors should replicate his portfolio or assume his forecasts will come true. It is that navigating major change requires a clear understanding of what you believe, the evidence supporting those beliefs, and the purpose behind building wealth in the first place.

Rather than chasing wealth solely for status, he encourages people to identify the life they actually want and consider whether there are simpler, less expensive ways to achieve it. Because ultimately, the opportunity to prepare for the future matters only if we remember what we want that future to look like.
